Hello all and welcome to my League of Legends Starter Guide.
First of all if your new to League of Legends there's a few things you will want to know for when you start playing games.
The first thing is IP (influence points) these are rewarded for completing games, if you win a game you win more IP. You can use the IP to unlock new CHAMPIONS and RUNES.
RUNES are used to improve your stats (health, damage, movement speed etc...) but don't worry about them until your level 20+ as the tier 1 and 2 runes are pointless and wont make a massive change to your game.
Anywho...
After your training game on the proving grounds you will have learned the basic in game controls such as movement, attacking and abilities so with that being said you are now ready to enter a game VS other players.
You now have a few options:
3v3 or 5v5 Normal BLIND PICK
(BLIND PICK lets all players choose any champion straight away but you cant see your enemy teams champions until the loading screen appears)
There is also DRAFT PICK
(DRAFT PICK puts your teams in order where the 1st person i.e team captain will get to BAN three champions while the enemy team captain will also BAN three champions. You will then take it in turn to choose your champions and try to "COUNTER" the enemy team)
COUNTER basically means you will try and pick a champion that will beat the other champion or the enemy champions abilities will not trouble you.
DRAFT PICK may seem like a good thing for you however last i checked you needed to own a certain amount of champions in order to join a DRAFT PICK game so just stick with BLIND PICK until you have bought a few new champions.
CHAMPION SELECT:
Every week you will be given 10 free champions you can play for that week so choose one of those.
While in champion select you will have SUMMONER SPELLS.
SUMMONER SPELLS are given to all players and give certain abilities you can use while in game.
You can also unlock new SUMMONER SPELLS as you level up.
As you are a new player your best choice of SUMMONER SPELLS in my opinion are GHOST (gives you a speed boost for a short time) and HEAL (heals you and friendly players around you for a small amount) these both have a cool down of around 3 minutes.
Once you pick your summoner spells and champion the game will count down and begin.
The best advice i can give is try not to FEED.
(FEEDING is when you die so much to the enemy team they will be much higher level and have much more gold then you)
To avoid FEEDING try and stay at maximum range from the enemy team and close to your TURRET.
All you will want to do for now is kill the MINIONS in your lane.
(You will want to LAST HIT the MINIONS as you wont get gold for hurting them only killing them)
If you can master LAST HITTING minions your on your way to becoming a great LoL player.
Assuming you play 5v5 like most people do there are a few basics ill go over so you will know where to go and what to do.
The 5v5 map (SUMMONERS RIFT) has 3 lanes these are top (left) mid (middle obviously) and bot (right).
The top lane is usually a solo lane however at low level its usually a duo as there will be no JUNGLER (ill tell you about JUNGLERS later) and in top lane most players will use a tankish bruiser like champion, you can find out if a champion is tanky by checking it's info and see if there is a high health bar.
Also WARDING your top lane can help stop other players from trying to kill you. (ill explain about WARDING in a moment)
Mid 90% of the time will be a solo AP (ability power) battle with most champions in mid being a GLASS CANNON.
(GLASS CANNON pretty much means they really pack a punch with loads of burst damage however if hit they wont survive very long)
Bot is nearly always a duo lane with 2 very different types of champion.
First of all you have the ADC (attack damage carry) these are usually high damage, long range champions but low health and defence.
The ADC will have the main role of FARMING, this is where he will LAST HIT as many MINIONS as he can in the lane while attempting to kill the enemy players.
Second (unless a player picks otherwise) is the SUPPORT, these champions are usually equipped with CC (crowd Control) such as a stun or slow and also some form of defence ability i.e HEAL or SHIELD.
The main role for the support is to assist the team in killing the enemy while NOT FARMING, the support will get their gold from assists made against enemy players, but try to avoid killing the enemy champion yourself unless you have no other choice, like your ADC has already died.
Another thing the support will want to do is WARD, this is done by buying sight wards, vision wards or the Sightstone.
WARDS that are placed will show up for a few seconds and then be invisible to the enemy team and will last for about 3 minutes unless destroyed.
Placing a sight ward will reveal the area around where the ward is placed so try and place these in a bush or in a area you think another player will come and try to kill you but you have limited vision.
Vision wards do the exact same thing apart from they reveal hidden objects (Stealth players and other wards)and are a bit more expensive than sight wards.
Since buying lots of wards will become very expensive you could also buy the Sightstone that can also be upgraded to the Ruby Sightstone. The sightstone will give you some bonus health and also 3 sight wards, however you can only place 2 at a time. The upgraded Ruby Sightstone will give you 5 sight wards and you can place 3 wards at a time. Both the Sightstone and Ruby Sightstone will give you another load of wards every time you go back to the shop so they will save you a lot of gold and should be bought as soon as you can.
The last role anyone will play is JUNGLE this role is played by killing NEUTRAL MINIONS outside of lane, by neutral minions i mean minions that wont attack a player unless they are attacked first.
The main role for the JUNGLER is to sneak into lanes and help top, mid and bot kill the enemy.
A JUNGLER should have a good mixture of health and damage, that being said a GLASS CANNON or ADC is not recommended in most cases however there are a few champions that can handle it.
After playing a few games you will get a good idea of the type of role and champion you would like to play.
My recommendation is and always has been NUNU, he only costs 450 IP so you could buy him after just a couple of games and he will be good all the way through, even in ranked games at level 30.
NUNU is best played as a AP tank, this means you will want to buy items that give you both ability power and health. At first NUNU is not great head on but as you level up he will become very strong with your snowball ability going insane amounts of damage and slowing the enemy loads.
Another one of NUNU's abilities is Consume, what happens is NUNU will take a bite out of a minion dealing X about of damage and healing NUNU, this is very helpful to keep you in the lane longer without having to recall and also if you are taking a lot of damage from the enemy team you can use it to keep yourself alive.
I won't go into too much detail about his abilities but with the Snowball and Consume its the ideal champion for any new player.
Thank you for reading and i hope it will help you become a great LoL player.
Please let me know if there is anything i have missed and i will try and sort it ASAP.
Also thank you to jason AKA Stumpeh for his tutorial clips.
